Athletes Acting Responsibly at the Commonwealth Games by Heinz Dschankilic

How times have changed. In article posted by James Burke of the U.K. Guardian, Burke comments on yet another problem that is plaguing the Commonwealth Games being held in New Delhi. Apparently, plumbers are putting in massive overtime to clear the pipes within the athlete’s compound of spent condoms. Like the Olympic games recently held in Vancouver, organizers of the games provide thousands of free birth control aids to athletes and officials during their visit at no cost.

This is yet again another illustration of the absurdity of the times in which we live. There is the underlying assumption of the organizers that if you put enough young physically fit people together in a central compound, it should be inevitable that sex outside of marriage will be an accepted practice. However, given that the scale of the games, some 7,000 participants in total, sex among unwed athletes is not merely to be expected by a few isolated individuals but in fact ought to the norm among the village residents.

What is even more bizarre is the attitude displayed by some of the organizers like Mike Fennell who comments, “If that is happening, it shows that there is use of condoms and I think that is a very positive story. Athletes are being responsible”. “If they are so active then that’s very good,” a spokesperson for the organizers said. “We are promoting safe sex.”

This is being seen as a positive result? Sinning safely is a good thing? Never mind that is an affront to the God who created us. Let’s ignore the fact that the sexual act is something that has been instituted to be enjoyed within the confines of one man, one woman union for life. As a Christian parent, I am deeply grieved by this downgrade of public morality. Christian parents all over Canada need to be deeply concerned especially if they have teen age children who have the potential of becoming world class competitive athletes.

The allure of fame and fortune  in elite sports carries  an intoxicating bevy of temptations. Not only is there the danger of performance enhancing drugs but now, it is expected, cheered and applauded that the responsible course of action is not to avoid sex outside of wedlock, but rather to do so in a manner that prevents either the spread of STDs or the onset of pregnancy.

I have a foolproof suggestion. What about abstinence? It works every time it’s tried.
